I held Han appointments and led campaigns before the Wu state existed. What my sons built after my death belongs to historians.

Lifetime

A life beyond one moment

  1. Youth

    At seventeen, I confronted river pirates and gained a local appointment. The biography gives no exact birth year.

  2. Han campaigns

    I served in campaigns against the Xu Chang and Yellow Turban rebellions and later joined the western expedition against Liang province rebels.

  3. Opposing Dong Zhuo

    I advised Zhang Wen to enforce military law against Dong Zhuo, then raised troops after Dong seized power in the capital.

  4. Campaigns in the south and central plains

    As a Han-appointed commander, I suppressed disorder in Changsha, cooperated with Yuan Shu, and defeated Dong Zhuo’s forces near Yangren.

  5. Luoyang and the final campaign

    After Dong Zhuo withdrew, I entered Luoyang and repaired Han imperial tombs. I later died during the campaign against Liu Biao; accounts differ on the circumstances.

  6. A disputed object and a family left behind

    A later note tells of an imperial seal found at Luoyang, but Pei Songzhi challenges the story. My sons’ later political careers are beyond my lifetime.
