I served Liu Bei and Shu through several campaigns. The sources praise steadiness, but they do not tell a complete story of my childhood or every battle.

- Early service
I first belonged to Gongsun Zan and joined Liu Bei while he was assisting Tian Kai against Yuan Shao.
- 208 · Changban
During the retreat at Changban I carried the young Liu Shan and protected Lady Gan; both survived. I was then promoted to General of the Yamen.
- 214 · Yi province
I joined Zhuge Liang and Zhang Fei’s advance through the river routes and was later appointed General Who Assists the Army.
- 219 · Hanzhong
The separate-biography account describes my return through an encirclement to help Huang Zhong’s force and my defense of the camp afterward.
- 221–228 · Counsel and northern campaign
I advised Liu Bei not to attack Sun Quan before Wei, then later withdrew in order at Jigu when outnumbered.

Liu Bei
I served him from the campaigns with Gongsun Zan through the defense of Jiangzhou; a separate-biography account says he trusted me with his family during the Changban retreat.
Liu Shan
As an infant at Changban, he was carried to safety while I protected Lady Gan as well.
Zhuge Liang
We campaigned together in Yi province and later on the northern expedition; after the Jigu retreat he praised the orderly return of the troops in the separate-biography account.
